I need help w/ 1952 starter

I was trying to remove the starter on my 1952 F1. It didn't want to come off. I went on online and found some info and realized its not ike a current starter.
Before I mess something up I figured I would try this forum for anybody's ideas or expertise.

Can anyone help me out?

I can help you, but need to know what kind of engine you have.

Is it a flathead V8 or a 215 OHV 6?

First, disconnect all of the electrical cable running to the starter (there should only be one).

There should be two bolts on the front of the starter. They are very long. They go through the entire starter assembly, come out through the end and attach to the bellhousing.

You'll need to remove those two bolts and slide the starter out. Note the positon of the starter, and if possible mark the starter and the bellhousing for later alignment.

When removing and handling the starter, be careful so that it's doesn't come apart when it's loose. Otherwise, you'll have to do what I did... had to insert the interior components back into the starter housing. It was a pain. I've learned to keep the two bolts through the rear starter plate and put a nut at the end of each bolt. This way, the starter won't come apart.

You might not need this, but before you reinstall the starter, it might be a good a idea to check it for power. Just attach 12v power to the starter and watch it spin. Make sure that you're holding down the starter with your foot against the ground. Also, make sure that it spins straight and doesn't wobble. Wobbling can and will create problems in the future. Lastly, spin the starter with 12v for only a few seconds. Otherwise, you'll probably burn it out.

Hope this helps.

Ilya

P.S. I sent you an email. I have an engine mounting question for you on the 215.

If you hit the starter with power, it has to have the nuts tightly on the bolts to hold it together or it will definitiely come apart!!

Question Stuck again

Panelman, I got the two long bolts loose. The starter came out about 1-2 inches, far enough to get a bolt on the one bolt. But it wont come out any farther. It seems hung up . I tried muscling it- a little- i didnt want to damage anything. Any ideas/suggetsions.

You just have to wiggle it and say a few bad words and it will fall out.
