Is it fair to pay $150 to $200 to have a new starter installed in an F250 460 Camper Special? I'm not that great mechanically, so I think I'm going to have to have someone else do this for me. Thanks for any help.
If you unhook the battery, follow the cable down to the starter on the pass. side, unhook it from the starter, remove 2 starter bolts holding it in and you have it. If you really wanted to you could do it. It is very simple. If you absolutely don't think you can it should only take a mechanic about 30 minutes(if that). Find out how much a starter is and that will tell you how much he's charging you.
I have never put a starter in until this last weekend. Piece of cake. On the 390 there are 3 bolts, top one is a little difficult, but nothing horrible. Total time for me to just install the starter was about 30 minutes. Now you have to take into consideration it's a clean engine, no exhaust just headers.
If you can turn a wrench there should be no reason you can't replace a starter on one of these old trucks. In my opinion it's almost harder replacing the oil filter on the 390 then it is to replace the starter.
While I agree with you all on how easy it is to replace the starter, his question was whether or not $150-$200 is too much and I think it is, assuming a remanufactured starter is used, which I don't recommend.
i think its too much as well. a starter for these motors is cheap....i think it was under 50$ for the starter on my 390. if you can change a tire, you can change a starter. these are SUPER easy.
Don't use $50 remanufactured starters people. Enough of those, and you're in for a new flywheel.

Always remove the negative cable first. If you remove the positive cable first, your wrench can short on the grounded fenderwell and spark, which can ignite the fumes around the battery, and kaboom. Negative comes off first, and goes back on last.
