In Dec 2019, my transmission suddenly decided it would no longer go forward in any gears. I drove it in reverse to a transmission shop that was, ironically, just down the street. They fixed it, I paid 2500 for it and they gave me a 1-yr warranty.
11 months later - I kid you not - the same thing happened again. So in Dec 2020 I had it towed back to the same shop to have it checked out.
It’s now been another 11 months since then (now Nov 2021) and it’s still not fixed.
I’m not ranting….I’m just explaining. The trans shop finally gave up trying a month or two ago and towed it to Ford for their diagnosis. Ford is dragging its feet working on it and properly diagnosing it.
I called the trans shop again and here’s what he said:
He said that the Torque converter clutch solenoid is turning on but never turning off. They have tried new computers/controllers…checked grounds everywhere…and done everything they can think of (hence trying to get Ford to diagnose it). He said that there is a constant 12.5 volts to it regardless which gear it’s in.
I don’t fully understand how it all works…I know only the most basics about transmissions. I might not be saying things right.
Has anyone had similar? Or know what’s going on?
It’s been a very long year so far 2021…waiting to get my Exc back.
It doesn't matter if the TCC is on or off - it won't affect engaging forward gears. The solenoid is supposed to have power anytime that the key is on. The computer switches the ground on or off to control the solenoid.
Either the explanation got completely mixed up, or you have both an incompetent trans shop AND an incompetent Ford dealer. See if you can get a refund and tow it somewhere where they know what they are doing.
Trans shop needs to be very Ford familiar. Ford dealer may diagnose, but will likely want to tear it down as a final diagnosis. They missed the root cause when it was last worked on no doubt.
Mark's right, go somewhere else. I know it's not convenient but are there any good shops near you? Surely someone here will have a recommendation.
Hey guys - I already paid 2500 for the shop to do the work almost 2 years ago. It failed within their 1-year warranty. I want them to fix it. I don't want Ford to charge me 3000 to fix a torque converter...on top of the 2500 I already paid out.
I'm really just looking to see if anyone else has had a similar failure - reverse works 100%, forward gears do not.
If so, then I can have some hope there is a solution.

I understand that. That's why I said you should demand your money back. They can't fix it and have had it 11 months! I'm pretty patient, but I wouldn't put up with this.
I think you need to give them another few years to work this out, or get it to someone that knows what they are doing.

It could be loose feedbolts. If they drop the pan and the main valve body there are three bolts in the wormtrails that feed pressure to the clutches. If they loosen they leak pressure and the clutches do not apply.

...and that area is also prone to warping, so if the shop had that portion r&r'd even for just an inspection, it's a finicky area prone to warping (and often overtorqued etc etc).
The Ford dealer called and I passed along the info. They confirmed that it’s blowing out the module over and over when they test it…and wanted to know if I knew if any other electronics had been replaced.
