I recently had the gear shift lever snap on my 04 expedition. I made a trip to the local you pull it and replaced the steering column and the multi function switch. I drove the truck all night Saturday night just fine. The next morning my wife went to use the truck while I was at work and said it wouldn't attempt to start. I get home and see the security light rapidly flashing when I put the key in.
I read the codes with forscan and get the B1681 transceiver signal not received. I pulled a few from the junk yard and also bought a new one from Ford. No change at all what can I test next to start narrowing this all down.
How many keys do you have for the Expy ? All the keys react the same ? How old is the malfunctioning key ? Might need to program some new keys with ForScan.

I have 4 keys that were programmed and all 4 the same issue. I cleared the keys and have tried to program them multiple times but it always says pcm report success but key count has not increased. It's not detecting the keys at all I'm guessing due to the code saying it's not receiving a signal from the key reader.
I wouldn't be surprised if you have a wire harness getting stretched causing an open circuit. This would especially be the case if you and your wife use markedly different tilt wheel positions while driving with her wheel position being the lower.
Other distinct possibility is that the donor steering column you installed has a wiring harness issue that you inherited.
Assuming that you're using the correct transceiver module (verify it!), check wire harness according to this post I did back in 2010 for the same type of issue.
The PATS transceiver module (that's the pickup sensor around the key cylinder) consists of an electronics section and an antenna. Neither the WSM or the EVTM contains anything in it that would allow you to manually diagnose faults inside that module. Instead, it relies on scan tool communications for diagnosis.
The module connector has 4 leads as follows:
1 - WH/YE - Switched power from CJB fuse F28
2 - BK/LB - Ground from G301
3 - WH/LG - Transmit data to PCM pin 43
4 - GY/OG - Receive data from PCM Pin 42
OK great that will definitely help out. I noticed last night working on it I had no ground connection at all so I patched one in but no change but if one is broken I'm sure more are so ill get to pulling the harness apart. The harness is the same from my truck so not the junk yard part but I did have to move it around alot.
Do these ecus have issues with solder joints? I toned out the wires and all were good. I ran new just to see and nothing still no signal from the transceiver. I start pulling on wires on the pcm and it randomly read the key twice then back to the same problem. I go back and mess with the wiring at the pcm and it'll eventually read the key once
Well something failed in the pcm. I made a trip back to the junkyard today and found a replacement and programmed the keys and it went perfectly. So now my question is if I don't get the Vin changed is abs really the only thing I lose?
