CD4E Rough Torque Converter Lockup Clutch shift
The 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts are fine, both up and down shifts.
The rough shift happens for both up and down shifts, into and out of TC lockup.
There's no transmission codes or lights.
I thought maybe to replace the TCC solenoid. Any advice? Should I let it alone? Will it learn to be easier? Should I try friction modifier additives? New fluid? It looks like it's due for a fluid change.
I think you can check the lockup by tapping on the brake pedal while in 3-locked or OD-locked. Tapping the brake pedal should cause the TC lockup to de-couple and release the lock. It should release before the brakes start to apply, as when the brake light comes on, and should re-lock after 5-10 seconds with the pedal released to normal position. Doing that would let you check if the problem is in the lockup. One thing to note is that there was a problem with certain years pressure control that could cause problems. As I remember it could cause the TC to 'balloon' among other things. There was/is a Sonnax or other brand 'fix kit' that alleviated the high pressure problem. If you want to know what's inside, go watch the 'automatic transmission' channel with Hiram Gutierrez. He demonstrates complete takeapart-putbacktogether of a CD4E with explains and tips along the way.
