Unhappy CD4E Rough Torque Converter Lockup Clutch shift

I bought a 2003 Ford Escape with the 3.0L V-6. It has a rough shift during torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup. I know that's what's happening because I can watch my scantool (Torque app with Bluetooth OBD2 connector) that the vehicle starts and ends the rough shift in the same gear. I tested this with and without overdrive 4th gear. The harsh shift occurs in 3rd or 4th gear. I presume it's any gear.

The 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts are fine, both up and down shifts.

The rough shift happens for both up and down shifts, into and out of TC lockup.

There's no transmission codes or lights.

I thought maybe to replace the TCC solenoid. Any advice? Should I let it alone? Will it learn to be easier? Should I try friction modifier additives? New fluid? It looks like it's due for a fluid change.

I would put a presssure gauge on to check system pressure. Excessive pressure would tend to cause a harsher lockup. Other than that, it would likely be something in the valve body that is causing the pressure fed to the TC lockup to be higher than normal.
I think you can check the lockup by tapping on the brake pedal while in 3-locked or OD-locked. Tapping the brake pedal should cause the TC lockup to de-couple and release the lock. It should release before the brakes start to apply, as when the brake light comes on, and should re-lock after 5-10 seconds with the pedal released to normal position. Doing that would let you check if the problem is in the lockup. One thing to note is that there was a problem with certain years pressure control that could cause problems. As I remember it could cause the TC to 'balloon' among other things. There was/is a Sonnax or other brand 'fix kit' that alleviated the high pressure problem. If you want to know what's inside, go watch the 'automatic transmission' channel with Hiram Gutierrez. He demonstrates complete takeapart-putbacktogether of a CD4E with explains and tips along the way.
