engine conversion questions
okay guys, a guy at work has a 74 t-bird with a 4v 460, he will sell me the whole car cheap, he says it runs, i have a 79 f150 4x4 with a 77 400m, how hard would this conversion be and how expensive, would my half ton be able to stand the extra power, was the 74 460 a good engine, horsepower, torque? please let me know what you think

If they are both autos you will be money ahead. Otherwise you have to come up with manual parts for the 460. Motor mounts are pretty easy to buy. The 74 460 had low compression and a retarded cam sprocket, but fixing either of these is really easy. A set of small chamber heads will bump the compression up easy. A $40 timing chain set will cure the cam problem. These engines will make 300 hp and 450 lb/ft of torque really easy. Besides you could always convert it to fuel injection or anything else you have the money to do. Unlike the 351/400 which are much more difficult to do anything with.
Your half ton will handle the extra power easy. The only thing you will notice is that the brakes suck when you add a lot of power. But that is another easy fix for another time.
