390 v 460

i have a 390 in my 74 ford 4x4 i mosty use it for trail running and mud bogging. i have a friend that has a semi built 460 out of a boat that he would sell to me for a reasonable price. i was woundering if you guys think that would be worth the swap im not to particular when it comes to the numbers matching becacuse its not stock any more any way. it will also have to bolt on to a np-435 trans. do you guys think the 460 would be a beter motor to run? thanks for the imput

I haven't ever owned a 390 but have heard great things about it. I do have a 460 and wouldn't ever trade it for a thing. Lots of power. What's he want for the motor? If you do swap youll need different motor mounts and either a 351m/400 bellhouseing to make it mate with the 4 speed. You can even use your clutch and flywheel.

Need some more specs on the 460(price, some kinda parts list) to know if it's worth the swap. Also what kinda power are you looking for. The 390 can be built pretty stout with just a few things (intake, carb, headers, straight up timing)

Stick with the 390 has more torque than the 460. I have a 390 and will never take a 460. Put headers and a 4v on the 390 and you will very happy.

well if you can get a built 460 for 3-500 bucks I would go that route. I'm a diehard FE fan but that's a good deal. You'd almost spend that just in an intake for the Fe. I'm pretty positive you won't be able to use that flywheel though.
