Ford transmission code U is used to denote the automatic 4R70W transmission used in F-150 and F-250 vehicles. An alternative transmission used in both the F-150 and F-250 is the automatic E40D, denoted by the code E. The manual overdrive five-speed transmission often used in F-150, F-250 and Ford Ranger vehicles is denoted using the single letter M. Automatic four-speed and five-speed transmissions in the Ford Ranger are referenced using the codes T and D respectively.
Each code is used as a shorthand version denoting transmission type. These codes are found on the manufacturer's information sticker located on the door jamb inside each vehicle. The transmission code stated can vary between vehicles of the same model, depending on their year of manufacture. The transmission code B may be used to reference the same transmission type as T in vehicles such as F-150s manufactured in 2004 and 2005. F-150s manufactured later can be identified by their transmission codes Q and F.
Codes are assigned to all manual, automatic and automated manual transmissions to better facilitate replacements and repairs. This includes the three-speed transmission used in the 1950s Ford-O-Matic, right up to modern six-speed automatic transmissions in Ford Fusion, Lincoln and F-series vehicles.
Bought a pcm for what I needed and it was pretty much plug and play. Truck runs great and shifts a lot better but shifting a little hard into second, I got a new solenoid pack and a new torque converter with a little better stall to put in this week. Did find one wire difference from the 92 to the 95. The 95 has three wires on the small plug to the tranny and the 92 had four wires. Best I can tell it was for a coast solenoid but seems to make no difference. The new solinoid pack and converter should smooth things out. Thanks to all for the help and suggestions.
