i have a 92 f150 w/I6 and automatic tranny. swapped out the tranny with a e4od out of a 96 with a 5.0. i had to swap out the trans wiring harness with it. now the connections in the engine bay for the harness have the two plugs, one of them still fits but the other only has four prongs in it and the new harness plug has six. and now that everything is swapped around, the truck wont crank. please help
The MLPS connector is different on the '96 versus your old '92. The MLPS (Manual Lever Position Sensor) is located on the driver's side of the transmission. You can re-install your old one or get an updated connector from Ford to use the newer MLPS with your old harness. The MLPS tells the PCM what position the shift lever is in as well as containing the Neutral Position Safety Switch.
i have the original mlps on the e40d that was on the 96 truck. the wiring harness is also off the 96 truck. the only connection that does not plug in is the smaller of the two that are in the engine compartment under the brake booster. so im sure that my problem is in the wiring harness or the trans computer.
I have never changed the complete wiring harness or dealt with anyone that has. There is no separate trans computer, there is only one computer that controls both the engine and transmission. The Start circuit is not controlled by that computer (PCM). It's an analog function.
The swap you attempted is relatively straight forward with the only changes necessary being the different connector for the MLPS. Now that you are trying to change harnesses it is a different story. You may need to invest in some Electrical &Vacuum Troubleshooting Manuals (EVTM) to see what else has changed on the wiring/connectors from '90 to '96. These manuals can be found on E-bay and other online sources.
ok, so now i have replaced the power distribution box and the wiring harness that goes with it. the one with all the plugs under brake booster all the way through all the headlights to the battery side. so now i have all the harness plugs plugged in and the truck still wont crank. do i also need to find an EEC for my current engine/trans combo?
the reason im thinking this is cuz i connected the one out of the 96 with the 5.0 and the engine would crank but not start. the wires in the engine harness didnt match up to the EEC
See my previous response. You need to get a handle on all the wiring you have changed out. A swap from an I6 to a V8 is usually more than a plug and play project.
Check to see if you have 12 volts at the distributer. I changed a 92 to a 95 and didn't have fire at the distributer. Had to change wiring around a little for it
