crankshaft bolt question

Hey guys,
Vehicle is a 89 F-250 351w....just put a new timing cover and w/p in her. Went to put the balancer on and the bolt wouldnt thread in. I took a look at the threads and there was a ding in the end, I assumed when I impacted it out, it might of hit the inside of the balancer. I tried to grind off a couple threads, but couldnt get it just right, and I dont want to screw up the threads in the crank. Now my question is, does anybody have a clue of what size this bolt is? Or is this something I can match up at the hardware store. Aint it amazing how ya can tear 1/2 your engine apart and a $2 part comes along and kicks ya in the a**....lol

Thanks in advance, Rod

I am not sure about the 351W, But the 460 and 400 and 351M have a 5/8" fine threaded bolt in them.

Run a tap into the crank and clean the threads back up. I would guess its either 1/2" fine thread or 5/8" fine thread.

Red face Crankshaft Bolt Question

Superdave is probably right on the 5/8 x 18 NF threads / inch . Warning : be very carefull when starting the tap , make sure the tap doesn't remove the original threads in the crank , fine threads can be tricky . Good time to replace the bolt also .

I would use a tap with a taper on the front of it, I call them a starter tap. That way the taper usually aligns the tap in the threads properly.

If you can't get a bolt to start in the threads, don't even try to use a hardened bolt to cut threads. If thats what your meaning.

Take the bolt to your local hardware or automotive store and have them match you up with a tap that fits your crank threads. You can run a die over the threads on the bolt to clean them back up also.

Just don't force anything here. The tap and die to fit these could save you a big headache.

what I meant is, should the hardware store have the size bolt i need....it should be hardened(black), right? The tap, I can barrow, but Im pretty sure the threads are good. But like said earlier, a tapered tap should clean out the first couple threads. Yeah, thats why I want a new bolt..I want it to go in smooth as possible, I allready have enough headaches...lol...later
