Always something....so I finally got the starter all done today and took the old girl out for a 20 minute ride to go pick up some sugar beets from a guy. Drove there perfectly fine, no issues at all. Was backing down from a semi-steep incline after I got my beets, rolled back into the street, stepped on the gas as usual and the truck revved but didn't go anywhere! A slight "clunk" was heard, then I slowly stepped on the gas and the truck started to move. However, it was slipping under a heavy load, but still changing gears just fine. I drove all the back roads nice and easy to get her home. Got to my driveway finally and stepped hard on the gas and it just slipped hard and missed again. I was able to get into reverse easy enough, and parked it. Going back in drive proved a little more difficult, but I managed to get in relatively quick.
I checked the fluid while it was still warm, it is pink but has a very pronounced burnt odor to it. I'm not well versed in transmission issues in anyway, but I don't believe that burnt odor is good! I was thinking backing down that steep incline may have caused some foaming? I suppose I had better change the fluid and go from there.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be my issue?
40+ years may have hardened some seals and O-rings. May be time to look for someone versed in older Ford automatics. Usually they have morning sickness and lose reverse until warmed a bit when seals harden, but you never know.
From my experience, any kind of slipping or burning of the trans usually just gets worse. If there's some transmission aid that you find and it happens to work then it is usually a bandaid, and one that falls off at the most inopportune moment like: Traffic, On a hill or, When you let your spouse use it. All of which is stressful and can become deadly!
What year is the truck and what fluid are you running in it?
How many miles on the truck?
Fluid level was fine, it just smelled really burnt. Miles unknown since the PO had a broken Speedo cable, it's 1978.
I drained the fluid, nothing really bad I suppose. No metal chunks, filter wasn't too bad either. I replaced the filter, cleaned the pan real well, and refilled with Type F fluid, and bottle of Lucas tranny magic.
So far, it's been driving ok, I'm just going to run it until it dies, then worry about it. Probably just have it rebuilt, unless there are better options out there?
