I was starting some projects on my 2000 f350 CCLB. I am upgrading to a mishimoto trans cooler and while I had the old one out I noticed the bottom drivers side of my Intercooler showing some oil buildup. Do you think this is a leaky IC or possibly the original boots seeping/leaking? The fact that it’s forward of the boot would make me think it’s the Intercooler. I will leak test the system since I haven’t done it in a while but just wondering if anyone had some insight.
How is the whole power steering pump area of the engine looking? If that is oily too, it could be your oil cooler seals leaking. That is usually the suspect for oily residue. If that oily patch is confined to that corner of the intercooler then you may have a cracked intercooler.
The fan can and does blow fluids like oil all over the place. Your taking the right approach by pressure testing the IC in an effort to find a leak. A leaking IC is not real common, but it does happen. It is more common on the plastic end cap IC's, but you have a 2000, so your IC should be one piece and metal.
I see a bit more of a similar residue on the radiator in the picture. Are your power steering cooler lines and connections in good shape?
What we are saying is further investigation is required and it looks like you are planning on that.

Start with the simple stuff first.
power steering area is definitely messy with a good bit of oil on the lower rad hose too. My oil cooler was what I originally thought was part of the problem and I bought a replacement seal kit as part of my upcoming projects. But when I saw this I was wondering if it could have been something else. Hopefully the pressure test will give me some answers but I don’t think I will be able to get to that until next week. Thanks for the ideas.
Just to follow up, fortunately the Intercooler was fine. The oil cooler was on my project list and after that was completed I decided to pull the radiator and the Intercooler so I could clean them both and pressure test the Intercooler a little easier. The Intercooler held 20psi so I finished cleaning them and reinstalled. The oil cooler on the other hand was definitely leaking which I already knew. I decided to clean it really well and hit it with some of the leftover paint that I had from my turbo project. My guess is the oil residue on the Intercooler was being sprayed from the oil cooler by the fan or possibly the boot was leaking.
