Hey just looking for a little help here. So I got a 1996 f350 7.3 with the E4OD with about 206k miles. I noticed a little while ago that it was starting to shift a little hard and not long after that it was starting to shift early or sometimes it would shift later than normal. However it wasn't a consistent thing Some days would be good, some days not good. So I started with fluid replacement and just a new filter. Now, this fixed the hard shifting and for a few days it was shifting normal, but it recently acted up while I was in town and started having the same shifting issues. Like I said some days are no problem other days it shifts early or shifts later than it should be. No check engine light or any dash lights are on. I'd assume it's maybe just a wire or a ground but not sure so I figured I'd ask. Any guidance on where to start would be appreciated. Thanks
The place to start is ALWAYS reading the codes. The places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. I recommend Forscan, which you can download free at www.forscan.org. Their page shows how to select an adapter that plugs into the OBDII port I bought mine from Amazon for less than $30. Or you could take it to a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
Once you have the codes we can help diagnose this. Without the codes all I can tell you is that something is wrong.

Piggybacking on what Mark has said about checking the codes, most parts stores will NOT be able to read the codes from your truck. In order to accomplish this task, the most reliable and thrifty method is to use FORScan or FORScan Lite.
