2020 6.7 Exhaust Tip. Does it have a function?

I backed into a bunch of wire that was sitting under a tree and it bent the exhaust tip about 3 months ago. The other day I realized it had fallen off (just the very end foot or so of the exhaust pipe). It’s the double flanged tip. Does this have a function or can I just leave it off for now? Eventually I’d like to have a new one welded on but I honestly and pretty clueless about the exhaust stuff.

The stock exhaust tip on the 6.7 was designed to draw in cool air to keep the exit exhaust temp down during regen.

This is the correct answer.

I think the stock exhaust tip looks badass. I may be in a minority though.

Maybe not, as a few gasser people will buy a knock off copy and install that. The little vent things are only for letting in cool air and do not increase exhaust performance in any way. As to does it matter? Of all the things Ford has deleted and repackaged and de-optioned they have left this alone. Must be a reason.

Exhaust temps pulling hard or during Regen are 110 to 1300 degrees, without the mixer you are likely to have 1000 degree exhaust exiting the pipe.

With the Ford tip if they decide the next major brush fire in California is from an SD exhaust climbing a mountain road it is Ford’s problem, without it?

Less onerous but still an issue is someone who gets burned walking behind the truck at a stoplight when the truck is in Regen.

I don't think the special tip does anything while sitting, only running down the road where the air can flow in through the openings.

Aero past those vanes creates a low pressure area that even at idle will pull outside air into the pipe end. Some time back, I watched videos of Super Duties in stationary regen with flames coming out of the pipe. While the outside air does help cool the gasses, there is a cautionary posted in the owner's manual not to back that b*tch up to a grassy area when doing a stationary regen.

The issue isn’t just about not having the slots. If the last “foot or so” broke off, then it is exhausting somewhere under the truck. If that’s the case, you’re likely to do damage due to the heat. I’d get it fixed. There’s got to be some take offs from people who have swapped exhaust.

If it were my truck, I would want the proper exhaust tip

When we picked up our new truck that was first thing my wife commented on. She thinks it looks awesome, and I agree.
