Best GPR?

The best no-start is in your driveway. I shorted the GPR terminals with Vise grips and it fired right up and the voltmeter showed a big drop, as it should.

On Rock Auto, I see $30 junkers, $58 Motorcraft, and the web told me to get a White Rogers 586-902 - $80 on (boycott) Amazon.

What do the sages of FTE say?

Steve

The Stancor/White-Rodgers is the old classic is what I have had since 2014 and has been great. Trombetta is the new kid on the block that has a friendlier (in terms of mounting) form factor.

You have already identified the proper Trombetta GPR, but I will provide a bit more information for you to make an even more informed decision.

The Motorcraft GPR is a well functioning and reliable GPR, nothing wrong with it at all.

The Stancor/White Rogers is more heavy duty, but also requires to be "squeezed" in or relocated in order to fit properly. I believe I have only seen one install where the posts were in the vertical position where the others are with the posts in the horizontal position due to the overall size of the Stancor/White Rogers GPR. Nothing wrong with it at all.

The Trombetta came onto the scene recently thanks to Chris (KubotaOrange76). I recently had a strange GPR scenario present itself and I isolated the issue to the PCM doing what it is designed to do during a cold start situation. I replaced the 20 year old Motorcraft GPR with the Trombetta 684-1241-212 and have been very pleased with it. Nothing wrong with it at all.

Some Motorcraft to Trombetta comparison pictures are in the following link: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post19725837

Basically, you will be happy with any of the three choices above, just don't stray off that path.

Wiring the Stancor (White Rogers) to the fender is a little tedious, but I'm very glad I did it for the benefit gained by opening up the valley. I also get a solid tactile feedback when the relay clicks off, so I don't need to install the older LED mod. I've had the relay on my fender for nearly 7 years now without a single glitch. I would happily do the same with the new kid on the block as well (Trombettta) for the same reason - open valley!

What sort of wire gauge did you use for this? You check resistance before and after to see if it was comparable to the stock setup?

I don’t know the best but can tell you from experience to stay away from the parts store flavors. I’m going Trombetta or Motorcraft if(when) replacing again. May have to order one to have on hand or change out before failure so the lead time doesn’t cause me to do the unthinkable again.

Good questions.

Don't recall the chosen wire gauge, but I can check. My tendency is to always "upsize".

Did not check resistance.

I have one sitting on the shelf for that exact reason. Now just waiting for the replacement I installed back in 2010 to fail.

I actually also have another one on the shelf in case someone else needs one or I wind up with an extra 7.3....

‘I’ve been running the Stancor since 2015, it has been great. Absolutely no problem installing it either.

I am adding this to the thread to maybe assist others in troubleshooting GPR problems.

I converted to the White Rodgers relay several years ago and until recently it worked perfectly. I have the GPR indicator light installed and I noticed that some times the light would not come on. If I cycled the key switch a couple of times the light would come on. I assumed the relay was starting to fail and ordered another relay. I installed the replacement relay and noticed light corrosion (white powdery stuff) on some of the small wire control wiring connections attached to the relay. I think this corrosion was the problem all along. I cleaned all corrosion installed new relay and added a light coating of dielectric grease to all relay terminals and fasteners. I now have a used but good spare relay to add to my used but good parts collection.

Another stancor user since 2011, been working fine. Western plow's relay is of similar specs to the OEM's relay. If my stancor ever took a dive I would grad that relay off my fender and swap out if needed.

Installed the Trombetta relay last night and truck starts cold just fine. Nice to have FTE resources to quickly understand the problem and best fix.

Thanks for closing the loop on this and you will be very happy with the Trombetta. All three of the GPR's would have been great though.
