Also known as the New Process 4530, this four speed transmission has a 4.56 First gear and is fully synchronized, I believe. Pulling mountain passes in my '77 F150 with the 400, it is uncomfortable to shift down into Third with its very big gap from Fourth. The 5 speeds have the same issue. I am looking at the New Process 445 or 4530 which has a much shorter gap between Third and Fourth. This transmission appeared in '70s Dodges. Has anyone attempted to use this tranny in place of a NP435? I'm looking mostly at the bellhousing side of things.

Thanks,

Look at Dodge applications and see if their bell housings accommodated the NP435 bolt pattern. If that's the case then your NP445 will bolt to any 351M or 400 NP435 bell housing. Then it comes down to input shaft length.
Thanks, guys,
There is a 1 7/8" difference between the Ford and Dodge input shafts, also the bolt pattern of Ford and Dodge differ. I'll have much better luck putting the NP445 behind a 318. But further research indicates the early '80s 460 pickups used a B-W T19 with gear ratios similar to the 445. Maybe I need to start looking for one of those.
The NP435 and the BW T18 do not have the first gear synchronized, only the BW T19 has the first gear synchronized.
From what I have seen the T19 was used behind the 460 and the diesel motors in the later (80's) years.
The T18 my truck (81 F100 w/300 six) came with was in pretty bad shape and did not put a lot of miles on it till I swapped it out for a NP435.
Now like you I dont like the gap between 3rd & 4th gears as it is pretty big but I fixed that
When I installed the NP435 I also installed a Advance Adapters over drive (Range Splitter) unit so I can split all the gears turning the 4 sp into a 8 sp transmission.
Now I will say some of the gears are to close to be splitting when not pulling a heavy load but I do split 3rd to 4th gear a lot because of the big gap.
Because the 300 pulls good at low RPM's I can also use over drive at 45 MPH at about 1100 RPM.
I will also say in my case the OD did not change the MPG but it has lowered the RPM so less wear on the motor running at lower RPM's
I can also run with traffic at 70-75 MPH and turn 1800-2000 RPM.
BTW in 4th at 55 MPH was 1800 RPM I now can run 70 MPH at 1800 RPM in 4th OD.

Dave What is the rear differential and gear ratio in your truck?
On the T-19 weren't those hydraulic clutch transmissions in the Ford applications?
