400 3spd. tranny.

For starters, I'm gonna tell you my plans. I plan on building a dfrag car out of a 82 mustang hatch back. I know this is not a truck, but I don't know of any other forums that could give me the good advice.

I have a 400M and will be using it for the car.
I plan on using a 3spd. standard tranny. I want to know what will fit the bell-housing and can take 450+ torque and 400+ hp. with out shelling out every 1/4 mile.

Any help will be apreciated.

You could probably find a toploader, theyre pretty tough (tho thats a 4 speed).

maybe the T-18 or T-19 ? They came in broncos and trucks on all sorts of engines, including the 400, so they shouldnt be hard to find. Although they were 4 speeds 1st is too low to use, rendering it a 3 speed for all intents and purposes. Not sure how well they would hold up though..

here's the gear ratios for a T18:
1st-6.32, 2nd-3.09, 3rd-1.69, 4th-1.00

I was thinking of doing something similar, around putting approx ~310 horsepower 400 into a '78 fairmont (lightweight fox chassis like a stang). Trying to decide between a manual and auto.

edit: not all the the t18/t19s had the same ratios, i think they varied quite a bit. another website is telling me the ratios are:
5.11 3.03 1.79 1.00

also I think the the difference between the t18 and the t19 is that the t18 doesnt have a synchroed 1st gear while the t19 does. I guess it wouldnt really matter if you were skipping 1st gear anyway.

Well, I really want to use a 3-spd. cause I don't want a 4-spd and only use 3 of the gears, then thats just unused waeght.
Didnt some of the older 70s trucks use a 3spd?

Try this forum. It's for 335 engines but not truck specific:

You are thinking too hard. Three speed manual transmissions don't weigh that much less than 4-speeds, and the 3-speeds I am familiar with such as the T-85 are definitely NOT performance transmissions. IMHO you are better off getting an aluminum case 4-speed such as a B-W Super T10.
