Hey yeall I have a 1978 Ford f250 supercab 4x4 with 400 engine with 3speed auto tranny . would like to swap out tranny for manual, ideally more like a 4 or 5 speed. Was wondering what options I have if any? And what kinda costs I'm looking at ? And how big of a project/pain in butt to do ? Any help I'd be thankful to yeall .
The NP235 is a great and tough transmission. It is used successfully in MD trucks >20k lbs. 1'st is a non syncro creeper gear to help get rolling with heavy load or trailer. Or for running slow over rough ground. Running light, you would normally start out in 2'nd and it is functionally a 3 speed with pretty wide gear spreads. Some love it, some don't. I had one outlast 2 rebuilt engines and never opened up.
NP435 is a good trans, they can be found almost everywhere. If you do a lot of highway I would suggest a ZF5. Not the cheapest way to go but it has a lower final drive
Will ether the np435 or zf5 bolt up directly with the set up I have ? I know yeall said needs some fab is needed but is that just meaning the clutch pedal and shifter spot or is that to get the tranny to bolt up as well ?
So it'll bolt up and will have to get creative with clutch and shifter linkage and all...but what about matching it up to keep 4x4 because autos are usually longer so will I have to change drive shaft and transfer cases and or any of the 4x4 linkages ?
You may be within an inch, the NP435 and T18 have a spacer between the trans and transfer case. The ZF5 is pretty much that length. The NP205 supposedly bolts right up with a small amount of grinding
