Sunday I was going dirt biking and I went to leave my house and lost nearly all power it was chugging and blowing white smoke like crazy! Barely made it home turned into the driveway and like a light switch it ran perfectly….
Took the truck anyway and it ran fine the rest of the trip until two miles from my house I could smell raw diesel fuel in a bad way. Pulled into the driveway and puked diesel all over the place! The degas bottle is full of fuel and it blew it everywhere.
Injector cups intimate me I don’t know if I can pull them myself. I do have access to the tools to do it.. the type that thread into the cup to remove and hammer in to install.
A local shop I trust quoted me $2200 for the repair which includes a coolant system flush and motorcraft cups.
A local shop that I’ve heard is very hit or miss quoted me $1440 with a coolant system flush using alliant cups.
Should I suck it up and try it myself? I guess only I can know if that’s a good idea or not. Do those prices sound reasonable?
Any tips or recommendations if I do decide to do it myself? I’ve been watching videos and reading up on it just wondering what you guys think you’ve all been so helpful to me in the past. Thanks for any help,
Yes you will need new cups. Since you haven't ran it long the cooling system should not be damaged at all. My 00 550 needs new cups and I've been driving it awhile without a problem. But just go the whole set of factory cups and I would do it yourself. It really shouldn't be that hard to do it. If its a hit or miss I wouldn't trust it. I mean its kinda hard to screw up a 7.3 in my opinion. If it helps you can go on Youtube and find a video on there from someone who knows what there doing.
Andrew, sorry to hear about your troubles. If you are a wrench turner most of the time, you doing the work will certainly give you peace of mind the job is done properly along with its satisfaction of the accomplishment. Do consider if there are other items to address while under the valve covers. My buddy has the Riffraff tool and prefers it over the others and can be rented. Maybe there’s an FTE member near you that has this tool to loan you. Thee tough part will be the two against the firewall. Patience is very critical, when in a hurry, you’ll encounter issues that patience would possibly have avoided.
Good hunting Andrew.
Thanks everyone I appreciate the help. I’m waiting to hear back on a quote from another shop that came highly recommended by a friend at work.
Depending on what that comes back at I may just call RiffRaff and get parts coming. Looks like they have a tool rental program as well. I can borrow my friends removal tool but if RiffRaff’s is preferred I will spend a little extra and do it right.
On that note I’m worried I got knockoff Motorcraft glow plugs as I ordered them on Amazon a year ago to the day. They aren’t giving me problems at the moment but now that I know what to look for (again thanks to this board) maybe I’ll pull a few and check them to be safe—make sure they’re legit.
Were they sold by Amazon LLC or a third party vendor on Amazon?
I too bought GP's from Amazon, but it was 3 years ago and they were sold by Amazon LLC. They were in fact genuine Motorcraft/Beru GP's.
I can’t remember.. I’m pretty sure they were Prime because I don’t normally order stuff on Amazon that isn’t. I looked through my order history but it only goes back a couple months.
The link you posted indicates they are sold by "Auto Parts Wholesale", that means nothing though as the link could have changed over the past year.
Go to your orders and search for glow as you probably did before, then click on "view order details" in the top right if that section.
Once you select that, another screen will come up and it will state who the seller was where Amazon LLC is seen below.
Although this is a good sign, it is NOT definitive and the GP's should be inspected and evaluated in order to be sure. This is an easy task if you are going to do the cups anyway.
I made the mistake of buying glow plugs from Amazon....turned out all 8 were DOA. I got my money back, but I had installed all 8 before realizing they were crap. They had a silvery looking paint on the glow portion of the plug, other than that....they looked like legit plugs. Amazon refunded my $ and closed the sellers account, but I'll never use Amazon again for that kind of stuff.
Here I thought saving a few bucks was a good thing......nope, cost me more time than it was worth. I buy from RiffRaff now.
