I'm definitely going to replace frictions and steels, gaskets, seals, and bushings. I need a new one-way clutch. The only component that looks rough is the band- it's pretty beat up and blistered. I checked the fit of the older short tailshaft and housing with the case I'm going to use, and everything matches up. I probably won't bother using any other components from the older FE C6 tranny. One thing I'm looking into is the tailshaft bearing. It's a big ball bearing on the truck tailshaft, and I haven't found a source yet, mostly because I don't have a part number. The seal is also bigger than the one that comes in the kits.
The rear shaft holds quite a bit of oil, flush it out and blow it out good. Flush and blow out your cooler and lines, you don't want all the crap left over going right back into your new rebuilt trans. I always leave the back line off at first start up with a piece of gas hose clamped and put into a clean bucket, when your sure it's flowing clean, stop and hook it back up.
That's a really good point about flushing out the entire system. Who knows what's built up in the radiator? I appreciate all of the advice and tips- thanks! I have another issue. There are two aluminum tubes from the main housing to the governor housing, I assume to get fluid in and out. The tubes are very loose. I'm sure they won't seal at all. Is there a fix for this? New tubes? Expand them somehow to restore a press fit? Butter them up with some kind of sealer upon assembly? It seems like they should have an O-ring or something to seal them, but so they can still be disassembled. That, or tap the holes and use flare fittings.
Don't know how loose yours are but those things aren't a press fit. They kinda just slide in there but not wiggle around loose. You will most likely only find used ones. If you think they need replaced just mine some out of your other trans. Don't put any sealant on anything inside that transmission that is just asking for a plugged oil passage. Or here is one of many places that have them. Trans Parts Online C6 C6 Transmission Parts
If you are replacing that #10 thrust washer be sure it doesn't fall out of place while you are putting things back together. It will keep the main shaft from going in far enough to put the snap ring on it if it gets out of place.
Hmmm- OK, not sure if they're too loose or not. I'll take a look at the ones on the other tranny. The #10 thrust washer is the one under the parking brake disc, right? My output shaft doesn't get a snap ring; it's the short one. The long one gets a snap ring.
I suspect that they tighten up some after the transmission warms up since the aluminum will expand more than the cast iron. There are a lot of leaks in one of these transmissions but I suppose that they were designed that way. As long as you end up with the right line pressure when you're done it should work as advertised.
