Has anyone had luck using upholstery paint? My concern is in high use areas such as arm rests, consoles, etc... if you have used it successfully what brand did you use and are there any tricks to your success, as always I appreciate the responses.
Somewhere here in the Slicks forum is a tutorial on how to dye, or paint vinyl using products by SEM. If followed to the T, they work well, its all in the prep. Cannot find that thread, I used it to dye my armrests it worked good, do not know what it would do on cloth upholstery or carpet.
There are good tutorials on YouTube, Garage Journal, and probably others as well.
I've used SEM and SM Arnold on personal cars and both have worked well and held up for years of use. The part must be extremely clean, I use a red scuff pad and either blue Dawn detergent or Purple Power and hot water to scrub the part to degrease and prep it for spraying. SEM can be custom mixed if they don't have a can with the color you need. I dyed the running board covers on my '64 VW using custom mixed SEM to match the original color back around 2002 and they've held up very well.
As posted I also washed the job with Dawn & hot water a bunch of times.
SEM also sells a cleaner I then use it and after SEM sells a bonding agent be for painting.
I have used SEM on another project but have not had it on the road yet now guess 10 years?
I also used it on my 81 flare side, dash, kick panels and a quick job on crappy door panels to make them look better before I can replace them.
Been 2 years and I use the truck a lot and even the door panels are holding up.
Yep it's in the prep.
I will post pictures when on my pc.

I will add some photos soon, the paint went better than expected. I purchased the headliner and rear cab cover from Rod doors it’s an abs product, door panels and arm rests came from Dennis Carpenter all of which covered very well with the prep work and two light coats followed by a final. It was shocking how simple the process was.
I have mentioned many times about the benefits of small town USA, the upholsterer stopped by the house last week with samples and to look at the seats and console, he called Monday to let me know he picked up my leather and Monday night I delivered them to his place in the middle of the woods, he is an older gentleman that works out of a little shop in his back yard. That’s service that I feel is hard to find now a days. If everything goes well they should be back and installed to finish out the interior by the end of the month. It will be the end of the project that started 8 years ago and has been a phenomenal journey along the way.
