Painting over paint

I have a 66 F100. It has been Repainted before. I want to paint over the current paint. Does it matter what kind of paint it has on it currently? or can I put on any kind of paint I want on it?
Thanks Earl

I was wondering if it mattered what the current paint is on the truck. And can I paint with any kind of paint over it.

Thanks

It could make a difference, depending on what kind of paint was used on the repaint job and what kind you plan to use. I'm not sure what kind of job you are looking for but when there has already been one repaint it is generally a good idea to sand/strip it down and start over. If you decide to paint over the repaint, spray a small area as a test to see how it turns out. If problems result there are sealers you can use that will allow you to use the new paint. You can get some recommendations from your paint supply store.

I agree with GWall. I would sand it smooth, but not strip it all unless you have a lot of time to do this. Then etch the bare metal with an etching primer and then cover the whole truck with sealer. After that, go nuts with the color! I did that on a John Deere "A". The paint turned out great, but I should of sanded a little more.
Good luck.

My understanding is that if you use a lacquer paint over an enamel paint, it could lift.

laquer over enamel will most likely "fry up" meaning that the sovents in the laquer will make the enamel wrinkle and peel, this is not always the case but it is more than likely, if it is sanded well and sealed well you should be OK but its not a recomended thing to do! best bet as mentioned before try on a small patch somewhere!

I've done quite a few ''repaints'' and have always had good luck by water sanding or ''blocking'' the old paint with 600 grit waterpaper,if no body work is needed, and applying a good coat of quality sealer just before the first color coat.Always wash the vehicle with a good detergent(I use dishwashing liquid) and then, when its dry, wipe it down with a good solvent, such as acrysol, before you ever start. This should remove any grease, oil or a bodyman's worst enemy, silicone. If you sand it without doing this first, you'll just spread the stuff around and cause yourself some headaches later. Most ''fisheye'' problems come from not cleaning the surface properly.Any good parts store that carries paint supplies should be able to provide you with the proper solvent or ''pre-wash'' and the proper sealer.Good luck and I hope this helps.

id go ahead and block it down and see how much material is on the truck. I think 14mils is the recommended max.
