I just pulled this 289 4bbl out of a customers 67 mustang and found the tag on the intake. I know what some of it means, can you guys fill in the blanks?
I'm usually hanging out in the 61-66 trucks or the Fe big block forums, but work on them all.
Thanks!
Dan. TK65 Intake tag Interesting timing cover detail. For factory mag timing maybe? As far as I can tell this motor is all original except for the carb and fuel pump. Has all the Right bolts in all the right places.trying to keep it that way. Upon further inspection, a replacement motor maybe Found this sticker under the exhaust manifold. Note the black head. And this tag
Said to be a "universal" replacement. "E3" being 1983.
The Ford paper tag would indicate a Ford reman. The rivited on tag might also indicate that, but in the "old days" it would show bore and bearing over/under sizing>
I don't know, haven't removed heads to check bore and stroke. Or is there a casting number that will differentiate? Like I said, I'm an FE guy, not sure on how to tell the diff between 289 and 302.
The casting number on the block near the starter iirc for the SBF, will show the revision date of the block. Supposedly, they made the lower parts of the cylinders were lengthened just a tad for the 302. Block numbers here, C8... and newer are going to be 302 era blocks.
on the timing cover, yes you read that correctly.
On the block down by the pan rail, right rear is 0-C5AE-6015E SO, 65?
under the valve cover, 8B15 and 289.
looks to be a reman 289?
I've got a reputable machine shop picking it up in the morning. I'm sure if it needs a crank he has one, or can source one. I was looking at the chart you linked and by the block # and description I think it might be a 289HO. It mentions orange color code, rear of block. Would these be an orange circle in like paint pen? I know I could look at the main caps but this builder wants the tin, timing cover, and intake so he can run it in before delivery and I'd rather type and speculate than take apart stuff that I'm paying someone else to do. He only asks 200 more than the last shop I was using to clean and seal all of the above and run in the motor. I'm thinking GREAT DEAL.
