Hey guys, has anyone done an erg system delete on their trucks, I am looking to put long tube headers on my truck. I have heard of issues with pinging issues arising, what could i do to remedy this? or am I better off leaving that portion of the exhaust alone?
Leave EGR, you'll get better gas mileage if its a daily driver.
Get long tubes that have the EGR to connect to on header pipe #1.
Or weld your own in.
Hey thanks for the help. One day I am looking at pulling the engine and modifying it, would I have to get a new ECU for it where it would no longer have the egr, also is there a separate computer running the power locks, windows, and Cruise control?
Yes and no to the new ECU.
Your options are Tweecer, Quarter Horse, or PimpX.
Tweecer and Quarter Horse they are piggy back chips that go on your current computer.
PimpX is another computer itself.
You the turn EGR off.
I don't think there is a computer for power locks and windows, just switches and relays. If you have the theft control, there is a computer for that.
Yes, seperate computer for cruise control.

I don't think your 1990 will ever know it's gone or blocked. My '87 doesn't know I have a block off plate between the EGR and intake. These models didn't have EGR position sensors. I "think" it was '92 before that started.

They do have position sensors, but if you block off the exhaust gas flow but leave the rest of it intact, the valve will still open so it will look normal to the computer. Problem with this as a mod is that the computer will adjust the timing thinking the EGR is open, and may result in ping.

I have the vacuum line blocked to the solenoid also. Been that way for 15+ years. I've had no problems, but that doesn't mean someone else won't. It's bad enough with the PCV mist in the intake. I don't want the EGR gasses gunking it up more. I cleaned out the intake many years ago, then blocked the EGR off and things stay way cleaner in there.
I may have a light on, I don't know. I was replacing bulbs in the cluster last winter when I found I don't even have the socket for the check engine bulb to fit in. Truck runs good, so I figured why mess up a good thing with a light. As long as it runs good, what I don't know won't hurt me...lol
When I blocked mine, when I was chasing a stumble/vacuum leak, and removed the vacuum, I would get CEL, while driving down the road, when I stopped, CEL went off, until I got back up to constant speed, then CEL back on, so I found crack in vacuum line, fixed, then left blocked off, no CEL, when I removed and plugged vacuum line CEL would come back on driving down the road, so my 95's PCM knew when EGR was supposed to move.
As far as I can tell, there's no EGR position on my '87, and I don't think there was until maybe '92. I could be wrong though, as I am many times...lol (at least according to my wife)
My 88 had one. All of EFI gas engines (pertaining to this forum) that I have looked at have had one. But who knows... Gotta picture?
You could very well be right. Best I can remember there are only two wires on my EGR plug, but it's been a while since I messed with it. I can't check today. I'm having some foot problems and am barely able to get around inside the house with crutches. Hopefully I will be able to get to it and look this week. You've got me curious, and I don't want to be posting incorrect information.
Thanks for bringing this up so I can check it out for sure.
