Different 4.6’s?

I got a 99 f150 4.6 triton. In the process of getting parts for a tuneup when I noticed there is 2 different types of 4.6’s. One is Vin W and the other is vin 6. Is there really a difference? I just want to make sure I get the right parts.

Romeo and Windsor. I reading posts here over the years, the so-called "modular" engines seem to be made in multiple formulations with interchange restricted and frustration maximized.

So yes, there are differences.

if I ordered a spark plug let’s just say for the vin 6 but my motor is the vin w would it be wrong or would it work?

VIN code 'W' is for Romeo engine (six bolt crankshaft). VIN code '6' is for Windsor engine (eight bolt crankshaft). Valve cover gaskets as well as cam caps are different between the two engines. From my understanding, Romeo engines were intended for car applications, and Windsor engines were intended for truck applications originally.

I'm glad I found this thread. Already helping. I bought a short block and some other parts a while back with sketchy info. I was told it was a 4.6 from 2017 mustang. I assumed it was either an older 4.6, or the guy had a 5.0 coyote block so I ran for it hoping it was a coyote. Well it wasn't. Its a 4.6. But no heads came with it ahis story didn't add up. But the block is in good shape so I bought it. Then as I read about these 4.6s, I'm finding that its not so simple as buy any old set of heads, etc. Now I can know if I have Romeo or Windsor. Step 1 check! Lol. Now 2 or 3 valve?
I want to build this to put in a 56 ford customline that I have.

If you are starting with a bare 4.6, I would bet that for thou$and$ less you could get a late 302/4R70 combination, add carb and even a cam and even considering the controller for the transmission be running and on the road in less time to boot.

I dont doubt that you are right on the cost. But what fun is that? Haha I have a 302(5.0) I'm building for my wife's mustang and I put one in my 65 f100. Just wanted to try something different.
I have a 4.6 in my 07 f150 and have had a couple others. I just like how they run and want to toy with one a little. There's more than enough room in a 56 ford car for the wide engine and thats a huge upgrade from the old inline 6!
I just need to know what heads I can put on this block. I don't know if it was a 2v or a 3v engine. I read that it would have had a sticker with ID number. I don't have that sticker.. i guess they got lazy and didn't actually stamp it?? I have found some PI 2v heads for sale cheap but I don't know what I can get away with at this point.

Check the existing spark plugs with your new ordered spark plugs; compare the physical sizes, mainly the threaded lengths. In other words; check to make sure the new ordered plugs will not install further into the combustion chamber of the head. They should be the same threaded length, no longer, no shorter.
There may not be a difference in the head designs between the Romeo and Windsor, I have no idea. If the combustion chambers ARE different between the two; make sure the plugs are exactly the same length.
