I need to replace the flex plate on my 94 f150 302 4R70 trans. I have removed all four converter nuts and the trans is slid back 1-1/2" but the converter is not separating from the flex plate. I've tried prying it away with a screw driver but it won't budge. Trans is at the correct height so I don't think it's binding, what am I missing?
I’ve never tried to slide the trans back before pushing the torque converter back away from the flex plate first.
it could be that whatever the issue is with the flexplate is binding up on the torque converter studs keeping it from wanting to separate. If that is the case, you may be stuck pulling the trans with the torque converter still attached to the flexplate. Not sure how easy that is going to be, though. I’ve known people to do it this way, but on older cars with more room underneath.
im not an expert, but it sound like you either created this problem by not pushing the torque converter into the pump first, or it was going to be a problem no matter what.
It does sound like some kind of binding going on. Can you make sure it's properly supported so that it's not trying to bend off of the TC?
At this point, you can only push the transmission further back, as trying to push it forward could cause damages. You might install at least two nuts back onto the TC just to prevent it from falling to the floor when you remove the transmission.
Thanks for the replies guys. The trans is now 4" back and TC is still binding. Trans is supported on a hydraulic jack that I lower and raise to keep aligned. Had to stop for the night, starting back this morning.
Well I got er done. Got the trans far enough back to completely clear the converter and after 15 minutes of working at it the TC finally let go. Not sure if it was the studs holding it or the snout that fits into the end of the crank. I greased the pocket in the end of the crank and reinstalled the converter in the trans. I had forgotten just how heavy a TC full of fluid can be. Anyhow, thanks for the help
Make sure that it is fully seated in the pump before installing it.
use a straight edge if needed to Make sure the converter studs are not extending past the bell housing. You should have to pull the converter forward to meet the flex plate when done.
if not seated all the way you will destroy the front pump in a matter of seconds.
