Broken Fuel Pump

This isn’t a Ford specific question, but just an engine question in general. I have an international 392 I’m trying to get running, but the hole for the mechanical fuel pump is broken. The threads and a small chunk of metal are broken off on the left side of it. I don’t know much about these, but would it be ok to tighten the other side and make sure the other side is sealed well, maybe with high temp gasket maker? This truck will never need to be on the road, I just need it to move in and out of a barn for catering. There is still a pretty good seal around the hole for the lever. ( BTW I’m just putting a block off plate on it, not a pump.)

There is a good amount of pressure on the pump arm. If you still have some good threads deeper in the block, I would put a longer bolt in it and try to seal it up somehow. If you are going to try to run it with just one bolt, it may work but I doubt it. I would take the pump off, make a block off plate, and put a little cheap electric pump on it.

that’s exactly what I’m doing. I just didn’t know how bad it would be to use one bolt with a block off plate.

I may even consider tacking that one side in with a welder just to hold it in place. I’m not worried about it being super tough, just enough to move it every once in a while. Worst comes to worst I’ll pull it with a tractor, but I’d like it to move under its own power if possible.

One bolt would certainly hold a block-off plate, especially if you use rtv to help seal it and glue it in place. I was afraid you were going to use 1 bolt with the mechanical fuel pump.

That sounds like the best solution Dave. But do not weld the block off plate unless you do a seal weld all the way around as it will likely leak with a tack on one side.

I think welding it would be difficult since the block is cast.

Yes, you'd need special rods if arc welding. There might be other processes like gas welding or brazing. Again special rods, fluxes likely needed.

If you wanted to make it permanent then JB weld might be a solution. I think the best solution would be two bolts and sealant.
