I purchased a "Precision Fuel Pump" M23004 from O'R. The gas filter canister absolutely would not unscrew. They tried to tell me it was pressed on. Now, I'm looking for a fuel pump I see all sorts of problems people have had. Can someone recommend a good pump? With the canister experience I'm reluctant to take another chance in the mail.
Did you try a strap wrench? The canisters are definitely reefed on there pretty good. The filter should be good for 10k to 20k miles. Why are you trying take it off, if it's brand new?
The main thing is check for pressure output, lots of defective pumps sold these days. Good way to start a fire, I'd expect.
Unfortunately we don't have a big choice in pumps. All the auto parts stores and on line sell the same $30-50 cheap *** Airtex pumps under different names. I just had on fail with about 150 miles on it in my 390, same pump as a Y block. So I decided to bite the bullet and bought a $150 Holley pump. I have an Edlebrock pump on my Y block.
I opened up the Airtex failed pump to find one of the valves floating around inside loose, they are just pressed in and aren't staked..

I'm looking at the selections on Rock Auto for a 1960 Y-block. They list the Spectra, Delphi and GMB, with the GMB now listed as "out of stock". So all of these brands are made by Airtex?

Maybe I should restate that. What I have seen they all look like an AirTex but I'm not sure Airtex makes them directly, they appear to all be made the same off shore company. I've never seen the GMB one personally to compare.
How many companies are going to invest $$$$ for tooling to build these old style low demand pumps. Airtex is a large company that builds pumps for everything so I believe thats who is making them unless someone has different info.
Still have your old pump? I used to use the original Artie Gould in the 80-90's Used to drive to his house when he lived on Long Island, he'd grab the pump, go into his basement and come back upstairs 20 minutes later, bead blasted new rubbers and springs and worked as good as new... he has sold his biz late 90's or so but I'd give them a try again Arthur Gould Rebuilders | Water Pump & Fuel Pump Rebuilders
