Cool Fuel Pump knock

I justed replaced engine with a newly rebuilt long block (351W) and put everything new on it including the fuel pump. After carefully listening at this knocking sound (at 600 RPM with wooden dowel) it has to be the eccentric which is located on the camshaft sprocket which runs the fuel pump. Why would this be knocking?

Can I put a block off plate on the fuel pump location and run a in-line electric fuel pump? This knocking is driving me crazy.

Obviously, this must be older truck with manuel pump and carburator. Maybe you have wrong fuel pump?

You should be able to run elec fuel pump, you will just have to make sure it is the right pressure for carburator, it's been a while since I've had a carb, but I think it should be about 3-5 psi.

Yes, this is a 1986. I guess it could be the wrong fuel pump, but it works fine except for the knocking sound and it has a long arm which reaches the eccentric wheel.

Oh well. I've heard that 7 PSI is needed to replace the stock mechanical pump. Thanks for your reply.

Check to part numbers for the long block you used as compared to the fuel pump that fits it. If the block is a different model year than the block that came out of the truck, the length of the pump lever may be different, or any number of possibilities.

Rebuilt-aftermarket mechanical fuel pumps often have a faint knocking sound. The last mechanical fuel pump I replaced, I went back to the parts store and R&R'd the new one right in the parking lot after it knocked, and the second one also knocked, and I ended up giving up.

See if you can get a brand new Ford fuel pump. That should solve the problem.

Move to Electric

Has anyone out there moved from a mechnical fuel pump to electric for a carbureted engine? I'm told that a 7 psi electric fuel pump will work and won't even need a fuel regulator. Anyone got some input?

Thumbs up

any electric pump that puts out 4 to 7 psi on a stock carbureted engine will work, if your running a hipo engine then i would step up to a hi pressure pump with a adjustable regulator. the high pressure 100 psi inline electric pumps for 87 and up fuel injected trucks work great but you will need lines and fittings that can handle the pressure. these pumps can be had new for about 100 bills or less if you shop around.
