So I have elected myself to help a friend with his 1977 F100 351M conversion , I checked TDC on balancer and electronic ignition Rotor points at 4:00 position distrutor cap where Number 1 spark plug wire starts firing order 13726548 counter clockwise , Engine bearly runs 1200 rpms then pops out of intake ,but if I turn carb clockwise until it binds on intake runs better at Idle and above 1800- WOT , timing mark is inch away from pointer before BTDC ,took around the block at feels Missing ,shut engine off and restarts runs fine in park ,
So My friend has number 1 Spark plug wire below the 1 marked on the cap at 4 or 5 cloak position location on Cap ,I read about something that I can change the starting point on Dizzy Cap verses pulling the distributor and rotating couple notches ,What do you think , my other question is ? Is Number 1 normally at 1:00 position on cap standing at front engine looking down the middle of engine .
https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.895e4f89...sl=&pid=ImgRaw If you look at the part number 12127 on the side, put the rotor aligned with the first number 1. That should be plug number on cap. If you look at the casting right above the O ring where the seat area is there will be a chisel mark and a corresponding chisel mark on the engine block. If you line all that up you timing should end up within a degree or 2 of factory spec. That is assuming timing chain not off a tooth and distributor in good operating condition.
Thanks for the suggestions I was able to change firing order move the #1 spark plug wire to #8 position and start the firing order ,But I did use the idea of inch is 10 degrees well done
Looks like the pervious mechanic or owner screwed up when he was replacing spark plug wires ,He or They position number #1 on wrong terminal of the Dizzy Cap ,after moving over to #8 and installing number one everything fell into place vacuum Kan pointing down the middle of the block job well done
