Could someone take a picture or give me a part number for the timing pointer for a 351m/400 Engine. Trying to set timing and have no reference mark to time too. . I guess the next step is to find TDC as best I can through the spark plug holes and guess from there. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
First off...the timing pointer hangs on a dowl on the lower left hand (as you're looking at it) face of the block...an gets bolted through the timing cover. It's kinda a rectangular looking thing with a triangulated shape perpendicular to it.
If you're bound and determined to find TDC, pull the number plug, and you can either disconnect the coil and bump the key until no more compressed air comes out...or...put a dowl or screw driver down the hole and manually turn it over at the crank until the screw driver is at the top. That'll be tdc.
However, if you don't have a pointer, but know you're relative close to being in time, twist the dizzy until the engine starts to ping, then back off.
Thanks, well sounds like the pointer is missing for sure...Do you set the timing with the vacuum advance line attached to the distributor or with it plugged.
And are you sure its gone? Mine was pretty hard to find. If you're standing outside truck looking at the engine, it should be in about the 10-11 o'clock position. It might be caked with grease and be hiding so try spraying a lil bit of carb cleaner.
Yep its gone I can see the locating pin and the bolts exactly where you said to look. Does it make a difference where the other side of the vacuum line goes. I had it on the back of the carb, but didnt seem to be getting any vacuum at all, so I moved it to the vacuum tree on the back of the engine. Now I am afraid I am getting to much vacuum. On this engine apparently someone has tried to remove all the smog equipment, but I have no idea how the vacuum lines should be run now. Thanks again for everyones help.
