I recently did a swap. I put a 400 from an 82 E250 2wd into my 78 F150, which had a 351M. I retained the 351 distributor in the 400. I also kept the carb from the 351. Problem is it does not run correctly. No power really ugly mileage. The timing is correct. when installed I put in a new timing chain and gears, plugs, pickup coil, coil, plug wires, cap and rotor. I have been told by parts dealers there is a differance between the ECUs and that there isn't. Help any suggestions?
Air good
Fuel Good
Spark checked and it is OK.
Dstributor pointing in the correct direction. Out of the 351. But I do have the one from the 400.
Timing set at 3% BTDC For the 400 it could be from 12 to 3 and I have tried all of the above.
Tweeking the fuel mixture helps but very little.
Is there a difference in the Timing Chain and gears.
Verified your plug wires to make sure they are all in the correct order? I would also put a vacuum gauge on the motor to make sure the carb is adjusted correctly and the motor is in good shape.
