EEC III Codes

I have a 94 2.3L w/ 160,000 miles driven. For several months now the Engine Light has been on and when I pulled the codes I get the following...

327 ~ EGR feedback signal is/was low
411 ~ Idle Speed system not controlling idle properly (generally Idle speed to high)
538 ~ System did not recieve the "goose" test
(Courtesy of DaliDesign.com)

I am no expert neither am I familiar with EEC III systems or the codes. I tend to think that this is an EGR fault and most likely the EGR valve needs replaced. However, like I said I don't know for sure.

If there is someone that might have a more educated or better idea as to what is/could be wrong...please let me know. I would hate to spend the money for something that I don't need!

Thanks for the ideas

Regarding the EGR issue...

I'm not exactly sure of the EGR setup on your truck, so it's hard for me to say, but if there is an EGR sensor you should consider that as well as the EGR valve itself. On the other Ranger engines, its the EGR sensor that usually causes the problems and more rarely the valve itself is to blame. You also might try cleaning your current EGR valve out first.

Make sure you take off the cables from the battery terminals (negative first) and reset the computer for about 20 minutes after the repair is done, and then see if the EGR-related code(s) come back.

BTW, yours is acually an EEC-IV system...

sorry about the mixup, I thought it was EEC III. But thanks for the clarification. I will definately start looking for the sensor and maybe I can actually get my Engine Light to finally go off! Thanks for the suggests.

When you run the test you should have been prompted to floor it briefly, thats what the goose code is.

how are you prompted. I only have a little cheap scanner that beeps and has a flashing light (by actron). Since it was given to me I have no instruction manual. As far as I can tell there is no prompt. Can you clarify that Ken00

Thanks

If you go back and read through the other part of the DalidDesign ECC-IV website, you might get a better idea of how to pull the codes. It's a sequential type of procedure, so timing is important. The goose code will show up as a single beep and/or a light on your scanner at a certain point in the process:

You can also read the procedure I have in the tech info post on pulling the eec4 codes.

Hi nightme_02,

Just went through the crapola that you are now going through!

Follow all other posts + also add mine:

327 ~ EGR feedback signal is/was low:
~Follow Rockledges directions!

411 ~ Idle Speed system not controlling idle properly (generally Idle speed to high):
~Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) needs cleaning + testing! Also clean Throttle Body; maybe sticking <(DO NOT RUN VEHICLE TO DO THIS)!
~Go to:
Sticky: Technical Information section (in beginning of Forum).

538 ~ System did not recieve the "goose" test
When the test was in Engine Running (R) mode:
~First part of test check was for timing!
~Second part of test: after turning off engine, restarting>2 min., turn off 10 sec., fast needle sweeps, then 2 needle sweeps =4cylinder.
~*Here is what you want to know*>After the engine idles up + then down > after few seconds < then THE NEEDLE WILL SWEEP 1 TIME, THIS IS YOUR SIGNAL TO "GOOSE TEST" VEHICLE and follow Ken00's directions + also check out his tech posts too!
This whole process only "looks" complicated!
