some tailgates have a tension rod in them that twist when lowered and help lift the gate back up. Maybe yours broke? Do you hear any thing rattling inside?

I wonder if the tailgate assist is not eorking.. I had a 2011 that was broken and I repaired it, made it much easier.

It's like a torsion spring but it runs driver's side to passenger side.
The hinge is keyed on the drivers side.
When lowering, it loads the spring to counter the weight of the tail gate.

I have an opener damper that works great.
Just release the latch with the handle and let go of the tailgate and falls open smoothly on it's own.

These tailgates are NOT as heavy as the old school steel ones.
Making the back end of these trucks lighter does nothing for traction to the tires.
So light back there that I break traction a lot. lol
