Easy/quick tailgate removal
Has anyone modified their tailgate to be removed like the newer style tailgates do. You know, no tools required? If not do you think it could be done?

I am going to use the 80's style hinges and ount them to my tailgate and bed so the tailgate will be able to come off really easily. I dont know if it will work or not but soon I will get onto it to see if it works or not.

The hinge part on the gate is welded in. What I have done in the past is simply take a grinder and cut a slot equal to half the diameter of the post on the bed at the bottom of the gate, then hand paint some industrial paint on the exposed metal. Open the gate, fold up the straps so you remove the arms, almost close the gate and lift on on the side you cut. Off comes the gate. Best mod I have done to any of my trucks.

I just did this to my '73. I got the parts of a '80+ Ford. You will need the passenger hinge (part that bolts to the bed) and the round plastic part with slot that snaps into the tailgate - look over the '80+ tailgate taking note of how it works and where the slot is cut into the gate. Just use a grinder and cut a slot in the bottom of the tailgate to match up with the plastic piece, and put it together. It took me about 15 minutes and works great.
