I've included a video below. This is not the best video but I've had difficulty capturing this noise. Unfortunately it might be easier to hear the noise with headphones on. The noise becomes more prominent around 16-17 seconds in. Though its in and out throughout the video. While I rev in the video and the noise does follow it there slightly, it happens fairly independent of revving.
It's a higher pitch....not quite whine? Not a squeal? It doesn't sound at all like a belt. It sounds like nothing I'm familiar with.
Let me know if you can make it out and if you have any ideas what it is coming from. It's reasonably annoying and one of those things that gets you thinking a component wants to explode on you.
My hearing is not the best but that sounds like a failing fan clutch. Are you overheating as you use the truck? Does your fan blade turn easy by hand (engine off please). Does your fan blade seem to have slack or wobble if you wiggle it? These are some of the signs if the fan clutch is bad or heading that way. If so you want to replace it yourself ASAP and it is not hard to do. Sandy
Fan clutch was replaced, this sound predated the swap. Cooling is fine. No overheating climbing the hills on hot days. This sound happens on a cold engine as well, as soon as you start it up it starts intermittently sounding.
Additionally, if I have the hood open with the truck running, I don't hear it up front over the sound of the engine, only in the cab, which would indicate to me its something closer to the cab.
It could be the air pump (or anything else) Get under it with a long screwdriver or piece of pipe and put it on the pump and see if that is where it is coming from when it does it. I know you can't hear it while it is running but the pipe can. If no luck move on around the engine. Can't emphasize enough to be careful of the fan blades. Sandy
