Please help whinning noise !!!
The noise sounds like a supercharger belt whine from a factory cobra , or some other examples would be a bad power steering pump,or alternator belt whine .
The noise seems to be coming from the upper left side of motor. The noise is more pronounced when in park with the throttle ranging between 1800rpm to 2600rpm .
Driving from a stop its very noticeable in the same rpm range but will go away after 2600rpm under full throttle , driving with a lite foot you can hardly hear it . It seems only when the motor is under load in that rpm range it gets very loud.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I was told by one dealer since there are no codes nothing is wrong , went to another dealer had my truck next to 2 other trucks running mine was making a noise , but the 2 others were not, again i was told its just the turbo breaking in or the way the veins sound under boost and not to worry about .
I know something is wrong with my truck , if it was normal then it would of made that sound for the last 1000 miles i was driving it . Right ?
Also i did have the flash redone while i was at one of the dealers , it made no differance in the sound before or after .
I just wanted to add that its a F350 with duel alternators and the 6.7 reg cab.

Mine whines loudly on cold starts until the engine starts to warm up. It's loud enough that I can hear it clearly with the windows up. Not sure if it's a problem yet or not, I'll try and record it tomorrow morning...
My personal opinion on this , i believe its one of 2 things , i really think one of the pulley's or bearings are going bad . Then i start to think if thats the case wouldn't the sound be a more constant and have a higher pitch as the rpms got higher instead of going away?
Then i start thinking about the turbo itself and how its designed, which would explain the noise from a certain rpm and only when its under load . It doesn't mater if the motor is warm or cold noise is still there. It has no loss of power or mpg so far .
I made a appointment at another dealer to check , the thing is it seems since this motor is so new and really no complaints yet to ford on this problem its hard for them to figure out. The dealer i'm taking it to is going to start by load testing all the pulleys on the drive belt , if that comes up blank . They said the would probably have to replace the turbo.

He said he could hear the same tone from the other trucks but it just wasn't as loud.
He concluded by saying don't worry about it , if it blow's up ford will give you a new one!
I really wasn't happy with how unconcerned he seemed about the issue. So i guess now when people ask me is your truck turbocharged, I can answer no its supercharged ...

I asked him about a service bulletin that another service tech gave me from another dealership about a owner having a bad fan clutch replaced , because the owner was complaining of an engine noise sounding like a 747 .
He told me don't worry about that is must've been an isolated problem.
The service tech told me how to check that for myself , He said that the fan clutch is electric an just to unplug it to see if it makes the noise , it will set a code though being unplugged . he was nice enough to say he would rest it after i checked just to make sure that wasn't the problem . I'm going to try that tomorrow .
I will listen very carefully on a regular basis to see what I hear but I don't think I have what is being discussed here. I bring this up and post to re-inforce the idea that this is an inconsistency in our trucks. The 6.4 had pretty wide variances of experience from owners. Some had ticking, sooty pipes, worse MPG, better MPG, big loss of power during regen, shuddering during hard accel, different color smoke pouring out, wide variance on regen frequency, etc....
You know by now, nobody with the 6.7 has experienced any smoke events! That's a plus.
I think this owner was still in the break in period so who knows what that was about.
I disconnected the clutch fan the other day like the service tech from another dealership advised , started the truck and the noise was still there, called another dealer that was 40 miles away explained my whole situation and took it to them.
They listened to my truck, pulled it in and tested the voltage on both alternators and guess what ? Yep ,just like i thought the driver's side was operating at 4 volts less than the other one. That's what the whinning was. The bearing was going bad.
Now i don't know if the pcm reads the combined voltage of both or independently . The reason i asked is because i never got a light to come on ,but the tech told me it probably just wasn't low enough voltage to trip the light yet because it just was starting to go bad. It was just a defaulted part from a supplier , It happens.
Anyway, they overnighted one from ford put it on and no more whinning noise . Just wanted to keep everyone informed so hopefully someone does not have to go through what i did.
So now I'm going tomorrow to my dealership and throw this alternator at the service manager and tell him he can shove this up the field tech's ***!! It will just make me feel so much better about this situation.
