Kevin? That's a new one. I've been called a lot of things, but never before have I been called Kevin.

Between this and Bruce Jenner, FTE is starting to look like a pick up forum.
Not by anyone that actually knows anything about transmissions.
You can run the trans up to 225°F all day long with no problems. You can go up to 250°F for up to a half hour at a time.
.
What affect does that have on the fluid? I saw dark fluid after a 20min pull up some goat trail backroad detour around Monteagle. This was a windy, slow pull up a steeeeep road in 1rst and 2nd gears. The Excursion and Toy Hauler tipping the scales at +22.5k lbs combined. My transmission temps topped out at 225*.
I ran 30k mile fluid change interval and always felt silly changing what looked like new fluid. BTS transmission with 6.0 transmission cooler rarely saw over 180*. I visited BTS later that trip and told him about 225* and he was surprised and did a fluid/filter change.
No, the transmission was not damaged as you often say - but what affect if any does the ‘darkened fluid’ have?
My take away was staying under 200* and BEATING my transmission like a rented mule (towing heavy and even using hot tunes/almost 2x stock HP) and the fluid stayed fresh looking - but exceeding 200* made it ugly in just 20min.
I have great respect for your knowledge and experience and I speak for many others when I say we appreciate your input here. Thanks again for everything you’ve tried to teach us!!
Mark thanks for the feedback on the Bruce Jenner fluid temps.
Hopefully @marines5711 reports back with some good news!
Technically, shouldn’t it be a Caitlyn Jenner report? Prior to that, Bruce Jenner was not a tranny and merely an Olympic gold medalist/trans-am race car driver.

I will be flushing my fluid this weekend or next. It will be interesting to see if it’s still the right color, or dark after my hard pull where I hit 228. I have no idea how old or abused it was prior to that pull, but when I added the temp gauge, what came out looked nice and red.
I can't speak for all fluids, but those that meet the MERCON V spec are not significantly degraded by 225°F temperatures.
Pretty sure this would’ve been Schaefer’s? synthetic ATF in my transmission.
Ive seen Merc V get dark after going over 200* as well. Maybe chemically/physically ‘OK’, but I prefer to stay under 200* and I find that most trucks don’t have a problem doing that.
In my limited experience, trucks that run higher transmission temps than that have something else wrong.
Hey guys I did slow down and I stopped whining and I read thru the advice that you guys gave me. There was lots of great advice and solutions for me to track down this problem with my multimeter and a little bit of patience. My grandfather also told me to try the cheapest fix first. I drove my truck approximately 30 miles and parked it at home and you know it no start. Listening to the advice from you guys, I checked and I did have voltage on the small starter wire when the key was turned. I then did the trick that you'll suggest and '' jumped'' across the selonoid and amazingly the truck started right up. Thank you guys for putting up with my bad grammar and run-on sentences. but you guys were still here to help me. I have now driven the truck 5 times with no issues. I read my receipts and I was surprised to no end that 4 ford dealerships and 2 independent garages that I carried/towed my truck to and not one of them checked or replaced the solenoid on my truck. It was the original selonoid on my truck. I feel like I have been cheated of my money and enjoyment time with my truck. I will go to my local ford dealer and ask the service manager (who knows me now) and ask him why his trained ford service techs had not looked at or check the seloniod on my truck. I just would like to hear his answer and I'll let you know. Have not towed my boat yet the last few times that I towed I notice that the oil temp would reach 200 degrees quite easily and also the tranny temp would easily get to 200 degrees in stop-and-go traffic. I have been told by other ''experts'' that this is a common problem with 7.3's of my year. The ''experts'' said that the common fix is to check the fan clutch replace the water pump and swap out the oil cooler for a bigger one. Does this sound right guys?
Its great to gear that you have your truck back together. It suck that it cost so much heartache and money to figure out. I think its woth going to the autoshops and dealerships and slamming the relay on their desk and asking for a refund on the labor and diagnostic fees, since they failed to find the problem.
