Hey there, I have been dealing with an issue for the past month that seems to happen more often now. I am driving a 1974 f250 with a 360FE and a t-18 transmission and a new clutch installed.
I had an issue come up in a few different occasions, under hard acceleration in 2nd gear, there’s an awful grinding noise from the clutch area. One time it happened the clutch pedal seemed half stuck to the floor, and with the pedal in or out it would make this noise. Even at idle and not moving. It seemed to solve itself after I pumped the clutch and it “popped” loose, but it is concerning! Any ideas on what this could be?
Thanks for any advice!
Might be something with the throwout/release bearing or the pressure plate.
First thing I'd do is check the fluid level and then start checking all of your transmission-to-bellhousing bolts and all of the bellhousing-to-engine block bolts to make sure they're tight. Check your U-joints too. Rule out everything on the outside before taking it all apart.
My truck had loose and missing bell bolts and barely-tight trans bolts, and a clutch chatter problem. Once I discovered that, and replaced the missing ones and tightened them all, the chatter went away.
Thanks for the response! I will take a look at that this afternoon and see if everything is tight. Would it also be a good idea to take the bell housing inspection cover off the bottom and inspect the clutch/throwout bearing with a flashlight?
Probably can't hurt. Maybe reach in there with something and see if you can find any undue movement from the fork or bearing.
If anything with the bearing, it sounds like it could've hung up on the bearing retainer on the transmission, which can be a problem with Fox Mustangs with their aluminum retainer. You said that the clutch seemed to hang up while disengaged?
Another thing which could cause the clutch to hang open is if the pressure plate causes it - I once read about Centerforce pressure plates hanging open because of the centrifugal weights on them.
Sounds good, I will take a look at that as well. The few times this loud sound whirring/grinding sound occurs when accelerating hard or in a high load situation in second. The one time I was pulling away from a stop while slowly rolling backwards, it seemed to hang up and make the grinding noise non stop, the only way I was able to fix it was start in gear and pump the clutch until it audibly "clunked" and stopped grinding. Last week one of my U-Joints wore out, which I am replacing this week. Now if it has any correlation to the noise, I'm not sure.
I may have found the culprit, or atleast one of the issues. The motor mount on the drivers side was missing the big washer on the underside of the stud. So when under high load the engine was able to rise/rotate up an inch in the motor mount. I can see it has polished one side of the nut from doing that. I will replace the washer and tighten everything down and see if that solves the issue!
