Replacing O-ring on HPOP Fitting

Going to be replacing the o-ring on the front fitting of an HPOP this weekend.

Is there anything in particular to watch out for?

I’ve heard the threads on the HPOP strip easily since it’s steel on aluminum threads.

Loctite 680 came with the o-rings in the kit.

The threads in the HPOP are few, so Hans Ham Hands could strip it out pretty easy. Don't be Hans.

Generally you want to have the threads clean of oil, so swab them with q tips or paper towels. When I did that job the oil just kept coming slowly, but it turned out fine anyway. Have the fitting ready to go with the proper Locktite on it (not on the o ring) clean the threads one last time and screw the fitting in. I do not know the torque spec but just be sensible with how much to tighten. The o ring/thread lock is doing the sealing, not the torque.

Diesel O-Rings instruction sheet calls for 25 lb-ft but I would go real easy on that.

Well, happy to say replacing the o-ring on the fitting was a success. I removed the end plug on the HPOP to drain to do that o-ring as well since it was showing signs of leaking and now I’m faced with a new problem. The plug never seems to get fully snug. It turns a little too much for my liking. I got the threads super clean before applying the loctite 680 and the new o-ring. I let it sit 24 hours for the loctite to cure and twice now it has blown the o-ring. I really think the threads might be toast even though the plug screws in normally.

Is the next step to just replace HPOP? It’s virtually impossible to helicoil it while its in the truck and I’d rather not take a chance with that due to the high pressures behind the plug.

So I'm sure that I understand we're talkin about the fittings threaded to the discharge port that feeds each cylinder head? If so then the pump has to come out for sure, no way of repairing it installed. If it is the original pump your better off just buying a replacement from a reputable source.
