91 e4od w/302 t.c. problem
heres the problem. 91 bronco with a 302 and a e4od.
had been driving just fine. then one day stopped at a stop sign and had no more power to the wheels. got it home by downshifting. went out a 2 weeks later after a few other problems and she worked fine. parked it and started working on the fuel pump( other problem). now the other day didn't have power to the wheels again. i have not been driving her at all too scared.
what would cause the torque converter to work and then not work? i was told to change the filter and the fluid that maybe a valve was stuck and then it let go and a flush and change would help.
what would cause the t.c. to change moods that often? she is starting to act like my wife.
also if i want to change the t.c. out is there a link on how? and everyone seems to have a different opion on the price of one. some say 100 and some say 250. big diference there.
please help.... thanks to all who post.

What do you mean by "downshifting" to get it home? Do you mean you shifted the gear lever into 2nd when you wanted to get the bronco to initiate going down the road, then put it in drive when you got up to a speed that it wouldn't lug?
If what I described above is what's happening, then your E4OD is in "limp mode" and you most likely have a break down in communication between the PCM and the Solenoid block.
The first thing I'd check is the Solenoid block harness connector, located on the passenger side, above the pan, behind a heat shield. Take the heat shield off and look at the wires leading into the connector. Is the insulation intact or is it burned off and corroded? Are the locking tabs on the connector intact or are they broken off? Pull the connector off. Is it brittle? If the locking tabs were broken off, dab a paper towel in the sol. pin block to dry up any water which might be in there. Water getting in the pin block will wreak havoc with shifting.
If any of the above paragraph is true, I'd get a new connector at a local tranny shop and install it. Will set you back about $30.
I'm also going to send you an FTE email with an E4OD zip file attached which will help you with E4OD problems now, and in the future.

thanks for the file and i will get under there and check the connector.
it is halloween today so i will take a look on sat. nov 1 and reply about my findings then.
to your question on getting it home, yes i downshifted it into low 1, then into low 2 and then drive. once i got up to speed it ran ok except that it didn,t feel like there was any passing gear.
have a safe halloween and watch out for all of the ones under 4' tall.....
thanks
patrick
