I recently got a 1971 f100 with a 240 I6, and a t18 4 speed transmission. I notice that when i turn it over something continues to spin after letting off the key. It doesn't continue to crank the fly wheel and turn over but something clearly continues to spin for a couple seconds. I assumed that it was the starter so I replaced it, as well as the solenoid on the fender. Still something will spin after letting off the key. Could this be clutch related? Is this common? What else can I do to fix this, if need be. For what its worth even if the truck starts I can hear whatever it is still spin for a couple seconds.
Mine did this, I just assumed the starter gear was still spinning as it retracts from the ring gear into the starter housing, but you know what assuming does
The only thing that I can think of is the flywheel is spinning the starter drive after the engine starts. Is the dust shield that goes between the engine and bell housing in place. I have seen where it was left off which put the starter gear too close to the flywheel.
Another thing if there is a starter/alternator rebuilder in your area check with them about this, I think that there are different length starter noses and you have the wrong one.
If the main bearing with the thrust shoulder is worn bad enough the crankshaft is moving too far forward and is too close to the starter. This could be possible since you have a standard transmission.
I suggest you find out where the sound is coming from. You be under the hood when someone else starts it. Is the sound coming from the starter area or somewhere else. Like at the front of the engine. Maybe loose belt or alternator bearings going out.
