Speedometer and odometer stopped working
78 f150: replaced gauge cluster and speedometer cable due to the old odometer no longer working and when went to check cluster broke apart. New speedometer and odometer worked for 20+ miles, and now neither work. The needle and meter don’t move at all. I checked both ends of the cable and all seem ok. I’ll hook the transmission end to the drill tomorrow and see if I get any movement. Any other ideas ?

The driven gear on end of speedo going into trans is brass (?). I was looking for a replacement and they all seem to be plastic. Could this be or be part of the problem? For a replacement, how many teeth should there be? This is a stock 78 f150 2wd with a 302

Ok, so maybe the driven gear is plastic. I pulled the cable, tested it on the old speedometer and tested it on the new gauge in the truck. Speedo works! So now is a matter of trying a new driven gear I am guessing???

4wd or 2wd?
4wd the gear in the transfer case. I am about to replace my drive gear this week, and yes, it is plastic. Luckily my output shaft seal is already leaking so now is the time to crack it open.

Count the teeth, or what is left of them, on your old gear. Or, examine the gear closely, sometimes the tooth count is on the gear. Source a replacement with the same tooth count, shouldn't be too hard to find. All driven gears are plastic. Ebay has them all the time.
