Hello all. I have a quick question about my 7.3 and hopefully you guys will be able to chime in and help. I just installed a set of 180/80 injectors about 3 weeks ago. Truck has been running fine and I have driven it from Jacksonville back down to Jupiter with the new injectors. I was just heading home from work and I decided to get on the skinny pedal and I mean I got on it. Being a total dumb a** I forgot I was very low on fuel. I pulling into the next gas station immediately to fill up. I started my truck back up and it immediately was running very rough and dumping a greyish color smoke. I decided to call a buddy to tow me home as I did not want to drive the truck. It still has a stock mechanical fuel pump and no intercooler, but I do watch my gauges. I may have hit just north or 1300 only for a second. I am wondering if this sounds like a fuel issues which would be best case I have an electric fuel system sitting in my garage waiting to be installed when I have the time. Or maybe hpop? It is just weird because it starts right up but is running bad and pouring smoke. If anyone has any insight please let me know. I will attach a video of it running. It has weird gas like smell coming from the smoke but I know I used the diesel pump because I checked before I left the gas station. Maybe bad fuel? I am just lost because it was running fine and I put fuel in and it’s not running right. Unless I totally strained the mechanical pump. I would think it wouldn’t start it the fuel pump died.
Probably bad fuel and or water in the fuel. Have you changed the filter or checked it out? My brother in law that’s a diesel mechanic told me never to get below a quarter tank.
Anyone else have some insight, I’m kind of stuck here. I put fuel in my front tank, put some additive in and changed my fuel filter. I’m worried maybe I starved the fuel system and caused a faulty injector, or maybe one is stuck open. Going to pull the valve covers tomorrow, but not sure where to start to see if it’s one of the injectors. I installed them myself and it has been running fine, so it’s weird that all the sudden it’s not running right now. Has to be something with running it low on fuel with those big sticks. Any help would be great.
Do you monitor fuel pressure? You could have caused irreversible damage to the injector nozzles, plungers/barrels if you lost fuel pressure. Where did you get the injectors? You could send them back for testing and repair.
When you have a problem after making a change, go back to what changed just before the problem. Collect some of the fuel that you put in the tank and make sure it is diesel. Also by running low you may have brought dirt or water into the fuel system. Start with simple...
Might not be the right answer with how poorly it is running, but would it be worth while to buy a cheap $50 forscan plug and do a contribution test to try and identify which cylinder/s are having issues?
