Black box that filter screws into.

Hello everyone I’m a new member just joined today. I bought a 2004 Ford e-150 recently cheaply off Craigslist ($1,000). It needs a lot of work and I’m trying to fix it up and get it ready to go on some camping trips. I have beginner knowledge of auto repair and would appreciate all the help I can get. Here’s a picture of what I’m trying to repair. I know that dented cylinder is the oil filter but I can’t figure out what the dented cube/rectangle that the filter screws into is.

That is your oil cooler. My van is older and doesn't have one so I have no personal experience with changing one.
You didn't say what size engine you have in the van but I believe this may be the cooler you need. CHECK WITH FORD to double check the correct part.

Again I have never done this and hopefully someone else will be able to give you better details then I can. Here is an article about installing an oil cooler on a Mustang. I would guess that though the lines may be different, and you probably wont need to remove your air box, basic the procedure is somewhat similar to what you will need to do.

Yeah that is the engine oil cooler and it's supposed to be grey/silver.. like many other things under that truck.
Looks like it's been leaking for some time.

Changing that oil cooler is relatively easy----remove the filter, insert a 14mm hex wrench or bit socket into the center of the area shown highlighted---that's a separate piece and will drop free once the treads are full disengaged.

Here is another one for sale with pics of the top side and shows it to have a rubber O-Ring. The number on the sticker is not the part number...

Do you know what caused the damage to the oil cooler and filter? Kind of an odd place to have damage without damaging something else in the area.
Also unless the oil cooler hoses were bypassed somewhere out of the picture, the coolant would have been pouring out of the oil cooler where it is snapped loose.

That would bring up a question of how long the van was driven without no coolant? Did an employee run over something and attempt to drive the van back to the plant or did it happen at the plant and immediately parked? The whole point being, has the engine been damaged/overheated. I do not know if this can be done or not but maybe you remove the oil cooler and install a new oil filter directly to the engine. Then take the 2 coolant hoses and just tie them together so you can fill the coolant and run the engine.

If you get the engine running then there are several diagnostic tests you can do to get an idea of the condition of the engine.

Thats what i would recommend before spending much money repairing it. hopefully the engine will turn out to be great!

Because the oil filter and the cooler are both damaged from underneath its possible someone ran over something such as one of those concrete "logs" found in parking lots. Just my WAG though.............

The rubber o-ringed side goes towards the engine block, the oil filter having its own o-ring. When I installed my oil cooler on a reman'd engine I used a water pump sealant to assure it would be sealed. Also each time I replace the oil filter I'll make sure the attachment stud is tight in the block---I have a pancake filter adapter that might work itself loose if not frequently inspected.

The story with this van is the company lost the key, an over-eager company mechanic drilled out the ignition column (more pictures to come in a new thread because I’m not sure how to fix that either), and they moved it somewhere and let it sit for a couple of years. As far as I know it hasn’t been driven much if at all with this damage as I had it towed to my property and I currently haven’t been able to start it. The funny part is they eventually found the key and so I have the old key and what is left of the ignition coil assembly. There was no battery in the van and I just picked one up the other day and put it in to see if I could at least get the dash to come on and confirm the odometer (they told me miles would be very low)- only 57k! I’m hoping the engine will be in great shape but I have to fix this oil cooler issue and the ignition before I even attempt to turn it on.
