Good evening,
Got my long tube headers installed today. Everything went smooth excecpt on the driver side the clutch z bar hits the collector flange. Any suggestions on how to fix this without getting it cut and welded?
Also when the engine was started for a few seconds there was a large clank sound as it idled. I know this is vague but if anyone has a suggestion as to what it is please let me know. Has to be external engine as the engine itself ran smooth.. Maybe the unwelded flanges on the headers?
I stayed away from long tubes because of that reason. Shortys with a good muffler guy able to snake it around everything was a better option. You could always fab in a hydraulic clutch. Not sure why Ford changed but the late 50's trucks had hydraulic clutches.
What headers did you use? I ask because I just installed a set of Patriot on my 63 and although they fit "well" I did have problems with their customer service..Can you post a picture of the problem area? might help get suggestions!
Installed long tubes on both 65's with manual transmissions; Hooker w/ the 302, and Hedman with the 390. The issue with both is where the manifold and exhaust system connect at the engine cross member leaving little, if any clearance. Weak cab and engine mounts can effect the clearance but with both I have not had an issue with clearance at the clutch and Z-bar assembly.
I did have an issue with the clearance between the exhaust system and the transmission cross member and found there is an off-set exhaust extension where I was able to route the exhaust under/above the cross-member. Eventually took the truck to muffler shop who routed the exhaust over the trans cross member, around the spare tire mounted under the bed and out the back of the truck. .
