I remember back when you were doing your 351W swap you said you couldn't use Mustang headers on the 351 because they hit the clutch bracket that bolts to the bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Is my memory right? Where exactly is the interference?
I'm trying to find out if I can run a mechanical clutch linkage on my ZF 5 speed BEFORE I buy all the parts.
I was able to use flowtech shorty header's on my 79 F250 that i put a 351W in,and had lot's of room for the clutch likage. All I had to do was put a 3/4 plug in the passenger side header couse it has a threaded little pipe coming off about 2.5 inch's for the smog stuff!I had no choice to do this couse the driverside manifold was broke in half.
No,i used 1985 F-250 application ,and they fit awsome.I had dual pipe's made for the stock 302 manifold's that I had on a 351W and these shorty header's let me bolt them right on like I was replacing the manifold.real nice fit.79 F-250/350 didn't have the 351W but i put a brand new crate engine in and had to make up some exhuast and after i was done and the motor had 8k on it I noticed the cracked manifold, and I didn't want to go through replaceing the pipe's so I just figured out what my manifold's where from and bought header's for the same application and it worked out great.
I've always wondered why truck exhaust manifolds exited the rear of the passenger side manifold and under the third cylinder on the driver side. Maybe it's to clear clutch linkage? But my Mustang headers exit at the rear on both sides.
the Flowtech's I have exit just like the manifold's.just as you said pas.at the rear/driver side at the 6-7 cyl. area. it must be for steering colum, and clutch linkage's.Also in a 2 and 4 WD these header's hook roght back up to the stock y-pipe.I was able to run the driver's side right under the oilpan like it was a Y-pipe type fit and then they both go down to the t-case and the driver's side cut's back over to the driver's side then I put a balance pipe in before the muffler's which of course they are 40 series FLOWMASTER'S.every vehicle in the drive has the Flowmaster's.Ford make them sound 100%
