For the last 2 mornings the truck would crank right up run for a few seconds then miss and kill. After the stall I turned the key off and back on the truck started right up and ran fine, drove 130 miles round trip no issues. Between trips the truck sat for 8 hours and started right up. It seems like the last few days the truck needed a little more throttle to maintain speed going up a steep bridge I cross daily, but other than that been running like a champ. I have 380k on the original CAC tubes and a small exhaust leak so figured this may be what was causing a little loss of power. I will order the CAC tubes and install new exhaust gaskets this weekend.
Is the starting / stall something worth worrying over? The truck has never done this before.
The only monitoring tool I have is a scanguage. I was reading about the forscan and think I will get that order the bluetooth receiver.
I did look at the ICP readings it they seemed to be normal. I cranked it today for the first time since Thursday and it did the same except this time it took 3 tries before it would stay running. Once running it was smooth and didn't seem to have any misfires.
This morning I turned the key until the glow plug light went off and repeated again then tried to start the truck, it started and had no miss at all and didn't kill. Could it be glow plugs and Is there a way to test the glow plugs?
Diesel tech Ron has a video on glow plugs and how to test them. Pretty easily done. But when you get a scan tool if you have issues with glow plugs they usually will store a code you can read.
Would it be possible for the fuel to drain from the upper fuel filter after sitting for a while? Is there some sort of check valve to prevent the fuel from draining from the upper filter when not under pressure?
A 2004 "running year change" was discussed in the 2005 Coffee Table Book (not sure the exact 2004 date implemented), a trap was added to the fuel supply line to prevent fuel from draining out of the secondary fuel filter housing (anti siphon). This new fuel supply line is attached to the fuel filter housing using a banjo bolt and is sealed using two copper washers. This fuel line cannot be retrofitted to earlier MY's.
There is also a "duckbill" valve in the tank on the recirculation line. I guess there is a possibility that it might play a role in keeping the secondary fuel filter bowl full.
