emissions pipe to cat question

I don't think i've ever owned a truck where the emissions was hooked up to the CAT properly. I've just replaced the single CAT on my 1993 f150 5.0. It used to have the double CAT. It looks as if the pipe that attaches to the cat was cut about a foot short from reaching the connection on the CAT. How was this pipe originally attached to the CAT? Was it metal to metal connection or a hose or what? A picture of it would be great. Thanks!

also if anyone is doing this same swap, the emissions pipe bolted to a hole on the front CAT on the double set up. With the single there will be no mounting spot for the bracket so it will be kind of hanging there. i'll think of a way to secure it.

The AIR injection tube connects between the cats on every one of these trucks I have seen. It is generally not needed for most modern replacement cats.

It was metal to metal. The air tube connected directly to the converter.
