240 inline 6. Son was driving it a few weeks ago, called me to report it had died.
found that the pin holding the gear on distributor shaft had sheared, result was timing was off and it wouldn’t start or run.
I got a machine shop to press and pin gear back on, reset timing and it ran fine for two weeks.
this past week he told me it was running poorly on his way home from school. I drove it next morning and it died on me. Reset timing this weekend and it ran fine on his way to school today but died on the way home.
we reset timing again.... it was way off, got it running. I started driving. Died at first stoplight trying to get into second gear.
reset timing another time. Dies again.
Each time I’m resetting the timing it’s a couple cylinders off. Like 60 to 120 degrees.
The distributor gear is still pinned just fine, the rotor only moves slightly when I pop the cap (10 degrees or so) and wiggle it. I’m thinking that the gear is somehow skipping a tooth. I looked at the gear on the camshaft and there are no missing teeth or obvious signs of trouble.
Is oil pressure good ? Did you get a look at the drive shaft from the distributor to oil pump ... maybe it has a rounded shaft allowing it to slip ...
i believe so.... but even then, the distributor shaft drives the pump, not the other way around, so the timing shouldn’t be affected.
laying in bed last night I was wondering... it’s a new distributor with a new gear, should I have the old gear from the old distributor taken off and pressed onto the new distributor?
Just something to check, is the clip that holds the rotor cap in place, if not, the rotor may be loose enough to touch a plug wire prong, cracked the rotor and makes it turn.
